Top 10 Hidden Features in PDF-XChange Printer Standard

To create high-quality, professional, and print-ready PDFs using PDF-XChange Printer Standard, you must configure the driver settings to prioritize high resolution and avoid lossy compression. By default, most virtual printers compress graphics to keep file sizes small, which can lead to blurry elements. 1. Increase the Printing Resolution (DPI)

The single most important step for crisp text and sharp vector graphics is lifting the default resolution. Open Devices and Printers in your Windows Control Panel.

Right-click PDF-XChange Standard and select Printing Preferences.

Locate the resolution setting and increase it to 600 DPI or 1200 DPI (especially important for detailed CAD drawings or fine text). 2. Configure Lossless Image Compression

Standard JPEG compression ruins image quality because it throws away visual data.

In the Compression Options tab, look for the image settings. Switch the compression type from JPEG to ZIP or JPEG2000.

Turn off downsampling. Downsampling automatically lowers the DPI of embedded images to shrink the file size. Disabling this preserves the original source quality. 3. Embed Fonts Completely

If your target audience doesn’t have the exact fonts you used installed on their computer, their system will substitute them, ruin your layout, and lower text clarity. Navigate to the Fonts section in the printer preferences. Enable Embed All Fonts.

Do not rely on “Subset” embedding if you want the highest level of compatibility and archiving quality across different devices. 4. Avoid Rasterization (Keep Vectors Intact)

When printing from applications like Microsoft Word or CAD software, the printer might convert vector lines into pixelated bitmap images.

Go to the printer’s layout or advanced settings and look for the graphics handling sections.

Ensure that options like “Print as Image” are turned off unless you are specifically troubleshooting missing thin lines. Keeping it off forces the engine to maintain vectors natively.

Ensure the Text Rendering Mode is set to Auto to maximize text clarity without bloating the file size. 5. Save a “High-Quality” Custom Profile

Once you have adjusted your DPI, compression, and font embedding settings, save them so you do not have to reconfigure them every time.

Click the New Profile button in the top right of the Printing Preferences window. Name it something like “High-Quality Print”.

Select it from the profile dropdown menu and click Apply to make it your default virtual printing profile. PDF XChange Forum
